Featured in this book are rare and previously unpublished vintage photographs, many of them panoramic. This required a design incorporating multiple gatefolds (pages that fold out from the book). It was also double-sided, with vintage images at one end and contemporary ones on the other – halfway through the book, you'd have to turn it over and read from the reverse cover. It had little text, but extensive captions, and the photographs were the focus of the design. As the start of a new series, it was required to be easy to replicate for books about different cites or subjects. The cover design has been changed for subsequent reprints.
